Gaze (2022)
“It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”
—— Henry David Thoreau, Walden
We live in many landscapes in a lifetime; however, we seldom stop to look closely at the unassuming but ubiquitous details. During the past two years, I have spent a great deal of time alone. On days when I was unable to be with people, I found myself in nature. I yearned for eye contact; the kind of gaze that often elicits an emotional transmission between one another. As I looked deeper, I felt the earth staring back at me.
Have humans ever realized they are also being gazed at by the Earth? I think about this when I press the shutter. Gaze explores the idea that by observing nature, we might both see and be seen and may begin to reflect upon our place in the world.
